Professional Identity
Because of my past, resilience, and adaptability are core values in both my personal life and as a designer. When there is a lot of uncertainty, and things get difficult during a project, I keep going and I give my best. I learned that I can achieve a lot when I just try, and making mistakes is part of that, and teaches you about persistence, curiosity, and thinking in new ways in the process.
My past showed me that it is possible to become a better version of yourself through small but consistent efforts. My life has changed drastically for the better after years of getting to understand the way I work and using this knowledge to influence my own daily behavior. I believe design influences people's behavior and behavior influences design, which gives a significant role to designers there. Therefore, I am interested in behavioral design with a special focus on habits. I believe in the power that lies within transforming daily life actions from an individual perspective. I think society starts with its individuals, and giving people the means to improve on an individual level can indirectly have a big impact on society. Power comes with great responsibility, that is why I believe that a good design should motivate/incline people to meet their goals while complying with the principles of ethical design.
Additionally, I believe both intuitive and tangible interactions are key to influencing people’s habits. When a product allows for intuitive interaction, it is easier to use, thus increasing the chances of it being used repetitively, potentially resulting in habit building. On the other hand, tangible products facilitate intuitive use, namely image schemas, and familiarity.
From my perspective, influencing people’s behavior requires understanding the cognitive and physiological processes that govern these behaviors, which is why I plan to become more knowledgeable about these processes during my studies. This knowledge will give me the tools to understand users’ behavior and aim for the right outcome more accurately when interacting with my designs. However, people's behavior is challenging to predict beforehand; that's why I think that constant evaluation and iteration are essential in the design processes.
